Inspired in the early 1990s by the imminent demise of Jim's band Furniture, the versatility of the Korg M1 synthesiser, Brian Wilson and the first Blue Nile record, Because was a songwriting project that blossomed into a one-album band and a string of near-misses.

 

Recorded at home with rented equipment, Mad Scared Dumb And Gorgeous was released on Haven Records in 1992, got glowing reviews and was longlisted for the inaugural Mercury Music Prize the same year.

 

Following a handful of live shows - notably, supporting Boo Hewerdine & Eddi Reader at the Purcell Rooms and the Average White Band  at the Rock Garden, Dublin -  Because quietly retired.
